How to Beat Fire Giant

A practical Fire Giant strategy for Mountaintops of the Giants: target weak points, manage the arena, use Torrent wisely, and prepare for the second phase roll-and-fire pattern.

How to beat Fire Giant Elden Ring Mountaintops boss guide cover

Fire Giant is a story-critical late-game fight that many players reach undergeared after rushing the capital. The arena is huge, the boss is huge, and camera issues can feel worse than the moveset. This guide focuses on preparation and repeatable openings rather than claiming one “instant win” method.

Where to Find Fire Giant

You fight Fire Giant in the Mountaintops of the Giants after progressing past Leyndell and into the snowfield routes. If you are still finishing the capital, clear Morgott first and follow the broader progression path. Bring warm clothing or fire resistance if you struggle with environmental and boss fire damage together.

Recommended Level & Gear

  • Suggested level band: roughly 90–110+ depending on weapon upgrade and experience
  • Weapon upgrade target: high Somber / smithing path for your main weapon (near endgame tiers)
  • Vigor ideally in the high 40s or 50s so chip fire and rolls do not end attempts instantly
  • Fire resistance gear, Flamedrake talisman, or a Physick tear that helps fire defense
  • A ranged option or long weapon helps when the camera loses the ankle target

Preparation Checklist

  • Upgrade flasks—this is a long fight with travel time across the snow
  • Bring a strong spirit ash; Mimic Tear or other tanky ashes reduce pressure
  • Consider a strength jump-attack setup or a high-damage unique weapon you already know
  • Optional: summon player help via co-op if you want to learn phase two safely
  • Rest at the nearby Site of Grace and clear inventory clutter so you can swap resistance gear quickly

Phase One Strategy

  1. Focus the wounded ankle / weak point rather than hacking the torso blindly.
  2. Use Torrent to close gaps and reposition after plate-smash or roll attacks, then dismount for committed damage.
  3. Stay mobile when he plants the plate and sends fire waves—sprint laterally instead of rolling in place.
  4. Do not greed a full combo when he begins a roll; reset to mid-range and wait for the animation to finish.
  5. If your summons pull aggro, punish the free window, then help peel fire pools away from them.

Phase Two Strategy

  1. Expect more fire, eye-based attacks, and rolling pressure—prioritize survival over DPS for the first 20 seconds.
  2. Keep the camera zoomed out when possible; losing the boss behind snow and legs causes unnecessary hits.
  3. Watch for delayed fire explosions after he plants attacks—leave the glowing ground early.
  4. Return to ankle / weak-point focus when safe; chip damage from panic R1s at the wrong hitbox wastes flasks.
  5. If you die with half flasks left, you were probably too passive—if you die empty every time, you were too greedy.

Common Mistakes

  • Arriving with a mid-game upgrade level after skipping Mountaintops side content
  • Fighting exclusively on foot in the center and eating every roll
  • Ignoring fire resistance because “damage is fine in Leyndell”
  • Summoning ashes then standing in fire pools they dragged you into

Builds That Work Well

Strength colossal setups punish large hitboxes. Bleed can still help if your weapon already applies it reliably. Faith players using fire skills should watch resistances—fire vs Fire Giant is not always ideal; bring a non-fire damage option as backup. For talisman slots, prioritize HP, fire resist, and your usual damage charm from the talismans guide.

After Fire Giant

Beating Fire Giant advances the Mountaintops / late story route toward the Forge and endgame decisions. Continue upgrading your main weapon, check remaining map fragments, and decide whether to finish base-game bosses before Shadow of the Erdtree. Optional late challenges such as Malenia remain available when you are ready.
